Contrary to the old saying that you cannot teach old dogs new tricks, new brain research shows that the adult brain can change. It also keeps producing new neurons; which means that we have the capacity to keep learning regardless of age.
So, why do people find change so difficult?
One of my twitter friends shared a quote by Friedrich Nietzsche which aptly describes one of the main reasons change is difficult:
"Many are stubborn in pursuit of the path they have chosen, few in pursuit of the goal."
As Nietzsche implies, lack of a firm commitment to the desired change is one of the main reasons for the failure to change.
We are good at finding excuses for not working hard at change. We are:
- Too busy
- Too negative
- Too informed
- Too set in our ways
- Too confused
- Too lazy
- Too . . .
Intelligent and successful people are not exempt from having a hard time with change. Many hire me as their coach precisely because they are having difficulties with implementing a desired change.
If you are serious about change, there are powerful strategies for making change easier and effective. I use the acronym REWIRE to make it easy to remember:
Readiness
Engagement
Work
Imagination
Repetition
Enjoyment
