Dealing with complex challenges - Introduction

complexity

In the last few years challenges seem to be getting more and more complex. I see many organizations struggling with solutions that don’t work, because they require new approaches.

Have you been dealing lately with an issue that is proving exceedingly challenging? Have you been trying to find a solution for months without finding one that works? You are not a alone!

In 2007 the Center for Creative Leadership investigated the changing nature of leadership. Respondents believe the definition of leadership has changed over the past five years (76 percent) and the challenges they face are increasingly complex (91 percent).

More than 40 percent of respondents noted that their organizations have been facing a complex challenge for two years or more. This shows the challenges are either resisting solutions or evolving into new challenges. Challenges today seem to develop a personality of their own!

One problem you might be facing is that a resistant challenge eats up valuable resources and sucks away energy that is needed elsewhere.

It could be that you are attempting to solve these challenges with traditional solutions, which don’t work anymore. You need to find more creative ways to arrive at innovative solutions by working together more collaboratively.

Leaders can’t be “lone rangers” anymore. To be able to deal with the rise of complex challenges you need to emphasize building teams and relationships, collaboration, and change management. All three of these require effective business communication. In my next post I will share how to develop these skills.

What do you think?
