How high can you climb?

April 18, 2012 - 22:29 -- Dr. Ada

definitely not an easter egg

As an executive coach I spend a good deal of my time helping leaders make sense of their careers. Many times we explore their core work life themes, roadblocks, unique skills and talents, and what has helped them achieve success. One question I often hear is, "how can I help make my way to the top of my career path?" That's the subject of today’s post

There are no pat answers, and no fool proof formulas. Yet, there are three indispensable components without which you can't climb anywhere.

1. Know yourself

Think about your early years. What did you love to do? What came easily and naturally? What made you memorable? What skills, talents, and activities were recognized as “you”? What did you receive praise for?

For example, when I was young, I loved to be part of musical activities (I played the piano, sang in different groups and choirs, and was a music major in College), write, read, and understand ideas (which helped me learn English), observe and understand human behavior (that’s why I studied Psychology), help people (friends came to me with their problems), and do things my way (I was independent and a thinker). That’s what made me who I am today. In my work I utilize each and every one of these skills: collaboration, psychology, empathy, research, and creativity.

2. Think for yourself

Most people don’t like to think. The ones that do, will most likely become successful leaders. As a leader you can’t be a reflector of the ideas of others. You have to think for yourself. And to think for yourself, you have to take the time and space to think, reflect, bounce ideas off others, read, learn. The secret is not to do things just because “that’s the way they have been done.” Or because “everybody thinks that’s best.” But because YOU THINK that’s the best way.

3. Know and honor your values

You can’t be a successful leader if you aren’t able to utilize and express your intrinsic values. Integrity is one of the most highly valued traits in a leader. There has been much written about values and leadership and there are long lists of values you can explore. Make sure to take time to uncover your values, to honor them, and to openly express them.

How high can you climb? “The sky is the limit” if you are grounded in your authentic self, thinking with your head, and living with your heartfelt values.

Remember. . .

What you loved to do in your early years, your gifts, skills, and talents are the roots of who you are as a leader. Thinking for yourself will always set you up above “the crowd.” Living your values will distinguish you as a leader with integrity that people can look up to.
