Do you remember your first job?

Week #1 "New" [1of52]

Every leader — even the big names — started somewhere. Tales from that first job are some times swapped in cubicles, bars and conventions across the world. Whether good or bad, these stories help to connect with people.

You also have a story about where you started, and the path you have walked to get where you are today. It’s important to remember what was it like to . . .

… be new in the workforce.

… have great creative ideas and no courage to tell the boss.

… be the brunt of jokes because you had to ask many questions.

… be full of energy and desire to learn, but have to do an ordinary boring job.

… make a mistake and be scared to death you would be fired.

… wait with trepidation for your first performance review.

… try to make your food last to your next paycheck because your starting salary was low.

If you remember, it will be easier to have empathy for your new hires, have compassion with their clumsy mistakes, and make an effort to make a connection that can mentor them.

Remember. . .

You would not be where you are today if you had not started somewhere. Remember what it was like, tell the stories, and let your memories help others.
