As a leader, you need to be a lifelong learner, always a student. The problem leaders often share with me is that they don’t have enough time for formal learning. Yet, there are other ways to learn. Today I want to share with you the best way to continue learning.
I was recently working with a leader that had just been promoted to a very important position. He felt a bit daunted because he was now in charge of a division that included several departments. He was well acquainted with one side of the business, but didn’t know as much about the other side. He expressed his concern about how to get up to speed quickly.
My suggestion was to ask many questions of his people about that side of the business he did not know as well, and learn from the best among them. “I'm afraid they will not respect me if I do that” --he said.
That’s a common fear. In reality, you don’t have to restrict your learning to classes, readings, and trial and error work. Your people know many things you can learn. In fact, we learn better from other people. The only requisite is that you be willing to ask questions.
Remember. . .
You can learn from everyone. Asking questions is not a sign of weakness or stupidity. It’s a sign of humility and willingness to learn. If you know you don’t know, and are willing to learn, you are on the right path!
I can help you plan and achieve the growth your deserve. Working with me you will find your best path for learning, development, and change. To find out more, simply click here.
