The price you pay for the words you say.

September 3, 2012 - 00:04 -- Dr. Ada

Many times we don't stop to think about the impact our words have. Today I want to remind you of the price you pay for the words you say.

The other day after I suggested to a leader that her team could benefit from hearing more positive words from her she said in exasperation: “Why should I have to praise people for doing what I hired them to do?” And my answer was, “because it will improve your bottom line.”

That got her attention! “How so?” she challenged. I shared with her the results from different studies that clearly show soft words help create a positive environment that contributes to more productivity, less absenteeism, less sickness, less conflict, and better relationships with clients. She was a convert!

Since she doesn’t do things half way, together we made a list of hard words she wants to eliminate from her vocabulary and soft words that can reduce friction and conflict, and bring positivity to the workplace. Here I share the list with you:

Hard words that negatively impact the bottom line of your business

You are so ignorant!

That’s so wrong!

You are pitiful!

Why can’t you understand?

You can never do anything right!

How could you be so stupid?

Soft words that positively impact the bottom line of your business

Please

Thank you

I appreciate. . .

Great idea!

Do you mind. . .?

What do you think?

Forgive me!

Sorry!

Do you have a few minutes?

Remember. . .

Your words have an impact on everybody you have contact with. You pay a price for the words you use. Choose to say things that make their life easier and the work environment more pleasant. Choose words that will help, not hinder.

Choose words that will help improve your bottom line!

What other soft words can you use to make things go more smoothly?
