Most business owners and entrepreneurs know that designing a business plan is the smart thing to do. They know if you want to reach a destination, you need a map. They know being proactive instead of reactive needs their own plan.
Yet, those same smart people often overlook the importance of including personal development in their new year’s plan. They overlook the need and keep hoping to do better without being willing to plan and take action.
Why should I bother to make a personal plan?
Personal development is not only important for you as a leader, but also for your people. Personal development matters! When you plan and design your future, instead of leaving it to chance, you:
- Experience less stress since you have a plan
- Are more intentional and effective
- Are able to change unproductive habits
- Develop talents
- Enhance self-knowledge
- Improve your potential for advancement
Some questions to jump-start your thinking
To plan your personal development you need to create opportunities to think through, in a structured way, questions such as:
- What do I really want to achieve?
- What kind of person do I want to be?
- Am I clear about my personal goals and ambitions?
- Am I making the right decisions to get me where I really want to be?
- Am I in charge of my life and my work - or am I just hoping it all will work out somehow?
You need structured opportunities to think about, and plan towards your future. The exact content really depends on you. How much of your time are you willing to give now to planning your future?
Remember. . .
Your growth and development is in your hands. Don’t wait for someone else to dictate what you need to do. In a previous post, I suggested 3 critical questions for planning your future. Take time NOW to self reflect on your skills, knowledge, experience, personal attributes, communication, and relationships considering:
- What do you really want?
- Are you truly committed to change?
- How can you make it happen?
Give yourself the gift of growth today. Dream as big as you want, make a plan for your development, and work to make your plan a reality.
