Many things happen in the workday of an organization. Leaders have the power to affect progress and nourish employee’s motivation and engagement. After all, employee engagement is what drives the bottom line. How can you make a difference in the performance of the people that report to you?
The answer is so common place and simple that only 5 % of leaders recognize it. Teresa Amabile, is Edsel Bryant Ford Professor of Business Administration and Director of Research at Harvard Business School. She studies how everyday life inside organizations can influence people and their performance. In her latest research, she's discovered the answer. It’s the Progress Principle: Of all the things that managers can do to engage their employees, the single most important is the “small win”–incremental progress toward a meaningful goal.
In her book The Progress Principle, she reports specific actions that managers can take to catalyze progress and nourish employee’s motivation. Over the next few blog posts I will review them with you.
Meanwhile, if you have 18 minutes take a look of her TEDx presentation. It’s well worth the time.
Remember. . .
People want to matter. You can give worth to their work by looking for opportunities to support their progress. Think about one thing you can do tomorrow to celebrate any small progress they make.
