Practicing any skill, like golf, or horseback riding, should improve it. When you practice on your own, without deep understanding of what you are doing, you may end up repeating the same mistakes over and over again. Thus, you develop bad habits which are hard to break.

Your brain likes surprises. Curiosity is rewarding in itself. Exploring a different way to do something is exciting. Starting a new project you are not totally sure how will turn out is invigorating.
