Every contact a leader has with others is loaded with possibilities. Each one can build or break a relationship. Leaders tend to underestimate how even a brief interaction can change how people think about themselves, their leader, and their organization.
There are two simple words that are so powerful it amazes me they are not used more often. The two words are “Thank You.” A host of renowned bosses talk about the importance of thanking people.
The late Robert Townsend, former CEO of Avis, defined “Thanks” as “A really neglected form of compensation.” Max DePree, former CEO of furniture giant Herman Miller, described saying “thank you” as among a leader’s primary jobs.
A common complaint
I speak with many people in the workforce. One of the most common complaints I hear is that their bosses never say thank you. Bosses often ask for extra engagement, but seldom make a point of thanking them. They report that they want to be appreciated for their extra efforts.
On the other hand, working with executives I often hear comments like: “why should I say thank you for what I’m paying my employees to do?” Yet, "Feeling valued and appreciated" has been a driver of employee engagement on just about every engagement survey I've seen.
Power of "thank you"
The power of a simple expressions of appreciation is shown in a series of four intertwined studies by Adam Grant and Francesca Gino in a paper called "A Little Thanks Goes A long Way: Explaining Why Gratitude Expressions Motivate Prosocial Behavior." These researchers found, that a simple expression of thanks by someone in authority led people to be more likely to volunteer to do extra work. Their research shows that this happens because the simple act of being thanked makes people feel more valued.
Keep it simple
Don't complicate things too much. It doesn’t necessarily take cars, trips, or monetary gifts to make people feel valued. A simple “Thank you” does not take much time and is powerful. It only has to come from your heart.
When saying thank you, use a simple formula and you will be amazed at the results:
“I saw. . .” (be specific about what you noticed)
“Thank you!”
You'll find it only takes seconds to do this, and probably has a greater return on investment than anything else you can do in such a short time. As Robert Townsend put it, "Thanks" is "A really neglected form of compensation." It is also a remarkably cheap, easy, and powerful form of compensation.Remember. . .
One of the most powerful phrases in the world is “Thank you.” Positive affirmation inspires peak performance. Acknowledging a job well done will not soon be forgotten. Your team will work even harder to accomplish their goals knowing that they'll be thanked for their hard work and devotion. All it takes is a simple thank you!
Decide this week to say “Thank You” to at least 4 people every day. Two in the morning and two in the afternoon. You will be amazed at the results both for them and for you.
